Conversely, taking a planet through Warfare turns it into a “spoil,” useful for points at the end of the game and completely untouchable - but never contributing its icons for future actions. Colonizing a planet makes its icons available for future use, but also means it’s vulnerable to being stolen via an opponent’s Warfare action. What makes this compelling is that Colonize and Warfare might seem similar at first, but both offer unique benefits. ![]() Research, for instance, can be done twice if you reveal enough lightbulb icons, while Warfare is only possible if you reveal enough attacks. In general, this process of revealing icons lets you improve most of your actions. The Colonize card lets you take those planets for yourself, and revealing certain icons, whether from your hand or your colonized worlds, lets you take better planets. Two of the main card types are Colonize and Warfare, both of which let you take control of the planets sitting in the center of the table. ![]() There are plenty of subtleties at play, but I’ll just give one example. In reality, this is an even trickier decision than the card selection. At its simplest, you can either play a card to take its action or pick up your discard pile to replenish your hand. What’s more, since every card provides both a new action and a means of picking up points at the end of the game, rewarding colonies or techs or spoils or whatever else, every single card pick is about more than just choosing the most immediately useful action. But since there are only 18 cards in total, and since most of them are the same three types, and since picking a card blind means your opponent is blind to what you’ve just acquired, this becomes an important (and often informed) choice that can limit your opponent’s knowledge of what you’re holding. Every turn opens with a player either selecting one of three face-up cards or gambling by picking blind from the top of the deck. By way of example, let’s take a look at those two rules. I recommend this video for anyone floundering with the rules.īut what makes Microcosm so impressive is that it’s simple without ever really becoming simplistic. ![]() Even the box’s rules sheet strives to reduce it too much, resulting in a hole-filled mess that almost kills Microcosm before it even gets a chance at life - a terrible oversight for a game that’s otherwise so easy to learn and play. Sure, it’s easy enough to reduce any game to a couple soundbites. It might be lean, but there’s still enough meat on its bones to get a stew on. Where too many microgames are so obsessed with being svelte that they end up burning all the calories that would have given them some flavor, this one understands that good gameplay arises from a healthy decision space. The thing that makes Microcosm stand out is that it doesn’t feel like your run-of-the-mill microgame. It takes two players maybe ten minutes to play (barring severe cases of overanalysis), requires only nine turns per player, operates under the most basic of rules, and it looks pretty nice too. This is a microgame in the truest sense of the word, everything packed into a card box so slim that you could feasibly lose it on that cluttered desk of yours. For fear of spending more time writing about Eminent Domain: Microcosm than it actually takes to play a game of Eminent Domain: Microcosm, I’ll stick to the basics. ![]() ![]() ![]() That format confused 100% of our testers.Īfter numerous iterations and countless tests, we felt confident about the ideal user experience and moved onto the visual design phase - which, as always, began with sketching and trying lots of different ideas.Īs is so often the case, by the time I got to this stage of the project I thought I had a clear idea of what I wanted Beacon to look like - but in reality I couldn’t find a design that really worked. In early designs we tried reversing the order of a chat conversation, with newest messages at the top and oldest at the bottom. Anything that deviated too much from those experiences was confusing and unnecessary. ![]() Everyone we tested our designs on had an inherent expectation of chat , be it from Facebook Messenger, WhatsApp or iMessage. There were some things we couldn’t change. This was likely a hangover from how similar tools in the marketplace currently work, but people using our Beacon prototypes were skeptical of whether they were talking to a real-life human or a bot! People weren’t sure when/if they were talking to a real human. It was pretty overwhelming for such a tiny little tool, and it resulted in a lot of confusion , so it was definitely an area we needed to simplify. Our prototypes required a lot of clicking to get between home, search, messaging, articles and chat - then an equal amount of wayfinding to go backward, forward, and to close various bits of UI. Of all the items raised by testing, I recall a couple of interesting observations that ended up defining how Beacon ended up looking and working: Generally speaking, this testing validated our assumptions, but in a few cases it revealed that we needed to simplify things further. Once we had an approach we were pleased with, we put scrappy, clickable prototypes in front of real customers to determine whether they could be easily used and understood. ![]() A selection of Loom videos where I regularly walked the CEO and our engineers through a number of different approaches. Since I work in Australia and my team is largely based in North America, almost every day I recorded a video of my various concepts and put them to the group for discussion. Not surprisingly, Beacon quickly got pretty complicated given the amount of new stuff we were trying to put in! Every project begins with page after page of sketches. The idea was to be as messy as possible, but to figure out an end-to-end customer experience that felt simple and helpful. The process of designing big features like this is pretty standard - it generally starts by drawing hundreds of wireframes and figuring out which of them feels best. ![]() ![]() Hedrick and the Europeans were crowded around the window in the library when the saucer came into view with Rigby suspended in midair beneath it. The tuner also features a built-in metronome, combined with a chromatic tuner. You can switch between the guitar and the violin tuning in the settings. The tuner has been tested with many guitars, violins, basses, ukuleles, violas, cellos and banjos, and we constantly grow our test coverage with new recordings of the instruments. The tone is synthesized, and respects the setting of the concert pitch. You can also play the reference tones using the buttons at the bottom of the screen. The algorithms of both tuners are independent - the chromatic tuner uses the Fast Fourier Transformation, but the algorithm in the strobe tuner is much closer to what you can find in oscilloscopes, and is computed directly on the GPU of your phone or tablet. If you are in doubt how to use the tuner, please read the built-in help, and see the examples of the tuning process. The slower the pattern moves, the better is your instrument tuned. When it is rotating to the left, just tune up. When the pattern is rotating to the right, it means the tone is too high, and you need to tune down. When you get close enough, you can use the strobe tuner for fine tuning. The target strings are highlighted on the scale, and you can see how far is the tone from being in tune. The chromatic tuner accurately detects the frequency of the tone played on your instrument, and shows it on the chromatic scale. The chromatic and strobe tuners are independent, but both use the same input from the built-in microphone of your phone or tablet for their advanced algorithms. Strobe Tuner Pro is easy to use thanks to an additional chromatic tuner that helps you when your instrument is way out of tune.
